This training course is designed to equip experienced medical interpreters with specialized skills for effective interpreting in mental health settings. The curriculum covers the interpreter’s various roles, along with critical clinical, ethical, cultural, and linguistic considerations in behavioral health. Through practice exercises, interpreters will develop culturally responsive communication techniques.
Participants in this program will deepen their understanding of mental health issues, common psychological disorders, and treatment types. They will refine interpreting skills tailored to mental health contexts and apply their roles—such as conduit, cultural broker, and patient advocates specifically within these settings. Additionally, participants will master mental health-related terminology, improve their management of triadic encounters across various mental health settings, and learn to work effectively as integral members of a multidisciplinary mental health team through role plays and group exercises.
